CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide Reviews

There is no simple procedure or formula to prepare for the CISSP certification, and no single resource which can guarantee success on the certification exam because the background of each applicant is unique.
However, CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide, Fifth Edition was my only resource in preparing for the exam and I passed on my first attempt (April 24, 2010).

I spent 60+ hours in preparation for the exam… that’s 60+ hours of DEDICATED individual study using this book and CD, not 60+ hours spent web surfing during lunch hours or commercial breaks.
My recent background is in middle management, with 20 years experience in network architecture and data security, so I already had a firm technical foundation for the test areas dealing with protocols and encryption variations.
I also have an MS in Computer Science. Nonetheless, the exam was so broad, with topics covering general principles and concepts, that I could have prepared twice as long and still left the exam with questions about the outcome.

My personal opinion is that formal classroom instruction, through one of the many organizations offering CISSP preparation courses, is a worthwhile companion to Shon Harris’ book.
A study group is also a good idea. You will not obtain CISSP certification if you take the exam without preparation.
CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide, Fifth Edition was sufficient, but not 100% comprehensive, to prepare me for passing the CISSP test.

Cooking for Geeks: Real Science, Great Hacks, and Good Food

You need a copy of Cooking for Geeks: Real Science, Great Hacks, and Good Food
. Seriously though, this book takes everything I enjoy about Alton’s shows and combines them into a book for the beginner and pro alike.

Sure some recipes may seem to be basic. It may seem unconventional to some that there are people who cannot even scramble an egg, but I’ve learned from experience that these people do exist.
When my neighbor came flying out her house with a smoking pan, it had simply contained olive oil and water for boiling pasta but she’d turned on her stove and forgotten all about it.
It became apparent that people can even burn water if given the opportunity.

All thing you need to know about cooking is in this book.
From kitchen set-up and equipment to simple tips like reading a recipe completely before getting started, Cooking for Geeks has everything you need to start preparing home-cooked meals.

The book offers more than 400 pages of tips, recipes and even interviews with geeks of today. I loved reading Mythbuster’s Adam Savage share his love of science and cooking. Learn easy recipes like a 30-Second Chocolate Cake or ones that may seem a little tougher like Butterflied Chicken. By the time you’re done, you’ll understand that kitchen and be able to whip together nutritious meals for yourself and others.

It’s a very rare event that I come across a review book that I feel I must rush out and purchase a copy as soon as it is released. This is one of those situations.
I can’t imagine not owning this cookbook and I love to cook and know more than the basics already.
With outstanding recipes, entertaining interviews and witty writing, this is definitely a book you should hand your friends, family and especially neighbors who do come running out of their home with flaming pans.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was categorized as CANCER, I believe it might be more appropriately described as science based non-fiction.
In the last two decades I’ve seen occasional news items alluding to human cells taken from a black woman in the 1950′s that have been replicated millions of times.
The cells are referred to as HeLa and on the face of it I wouldn’t have thought there was much of a story behind the extraction of these cells and their use by the biomed industry. However, this book dispells that rather naive assumption completely and puts a name and a face, a family, and a story behind the contents of many petri dishes and slides.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks explains how the cells were obtained, replicated, distributed, and used without informed consent of the owner and family by John Hopkins and how they benefitted mankind w/o compensation to the family.
Author Skloot tells the story of a family victimized by socioeconomic conditions and racism that can’t get fundamental things like health coverage while these cells make a lot of money for the health establishment.
It is a disturbing read that will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. It may also make the reader take a long hard look at the need for standardized health care in our society among many other things.
The one thing that I found fascinating about this book is how Skloot managed to take a generally dry topic that might have been addressed in a scientific textbook and humanized it on a very personal level by developing a close relationship with Henrietta’s family.
The input received from the family took this book to a higher level and made it a very personsl story. From my perspective, it was very hard not to get involved with the Lacks family and not feel their sense of betrayal and loss.

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Vintage)

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Vintage) is the 2nd book in the Millenium series created by Stieg Larsson.

The plot revolves around the human and sex trafficing industry in Sweden and the murder of three individuals with connections to the Lisbeth Salander character.

I found this to be a pleasing (yet inferior) sequel to “Dragon”.

While one does not need to read Dragon, I would recommend it.

For my money it (Dragon) is the superior read.

The Lisbeth Salander character is a very interesting protagonist.
When Lisbeth is being written about in The Girl Who Played with Fire, the story seems to move – when she is not, the story drags.

The Mikael Blomqvist, Erica Berger etc. characters and how Steig Larsson created and developed the characters seemed deeper, fresher and have more substance in the first novel.

I thought the first book had a better focus, pace, fewer hanging threads, was more intricately plotted and had a better overall story.

With that said, the sequel is a good, not exceptional, read.

My recommendation is to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo first, then this novel to fully appreciate the world that Steig Larsson created.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of my favorite and the most influential theologians on my life and calling to the ministry. So when I saw this book being offered by Thomas Nelson, I had to jump on it, and I’m glad I did.

I was introduced to Bonhoeffer through The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together, Like many seminarians.
But I really didn’t know a lot about the person.
There was a little bit of background information in my copy of The Cost of Discipleship, but that was it.
This book changes all of that.

From his early childhood to his arrest and subsequent martyrdom for his involvement in the conspiracy against Hitler, Metaxas draws from the letters of Bonhoeffer as well as his family to write this biography.
Metaxas weaves the brilliant story that is the life and death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the man who stood and preached for what he believed.
When the church in Germany failed to stand up to Hitler, Bonhoeffer did.
This is his life. Through Bonhoeffer’s life and death, we really do see the cost of discipleship.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy is a must have for all students of Bonhoeffer.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Barefoot Contessa How Easy Is That?: Fabulous Recipes & Easy Tips

Barefoot Contessa How Easy Is That?: Fabulous Recipes & Easy Tips

I love both Ina’s cookbooks and her show.
If you have been a fan of both, most of these recipes are going to seem redundant, particularly if you own her “Back to Basics” or The Barefoot Contessa cookbooks.
While the layout and pictures are gorgeous, as usual, I couldn’t get over the feeling this book was rushed out and with a little more time and development could have been better.

It is a Great Cookbook! I have all of Ina Garten’s (The Barefoot Contessa) cookbooks.
They have great recipes and are easy to follow. Her tips are also very helpful.
